Macquarie Park Lotus Pavilion

The Journey

Set in a former stone mason’s yard at Macquarie Park Cemetery located by the Lane Cove National Park, the architecture of The Lotus has been developed as an unassuming retreat for religious and cultural groups to come together and recognise the passing of members of their community.  It is a private haven in which to hold these ceremonies.

The plan was developed on the nine square proportion which provides the flexibility of orientation for differing religious requirements.  The roof is low pitch and simple in form sitting lightly on a series of columns surrounding the space.

The idea of connectivity to the environment was central to the design. The finishes and textures have been selected to be evocative of those found in nature.  The design was developed as a place that captures positive memories and comfort for the community:  a peaceful place to mourn the loss of a loved one.
