The recent completion Peter Johnson Podium Fitout (L3-7) is the final and most significant stage of the Five Stage refurbishment and expansion for the UTS Faculty of Design, Architecture and Building which was commenced with the Fabrication Workshops and Photographic Suites (2008-9), “The Labs” (2009-10), Post Graduate Suites (2010) and Fashion and Textiles (2010-11)
Gardner Wetherill + Associates have been commissioned to each of these projects to develop innovative solutions and approaches to the issues raised by the Users (DAB and Teaching + Learning) the FMU group and the constraints of the building envelope to suit UTS’ requirements.
Following our successful fitout of the Faculty of DAB Fabrication Workshops, UTS appointed Gardner Wetherill + Associates in 2009 as their designer for the Digital Laboratories in the Faculty of DAB. Nicknamed “The Lab”, the facility has proven to be a huge success with very high useage. We have been asked to replicate many of the design features as part of the Peter Johnson Podium Project which we currently developing for UTS.
Gardiner Wetherill and Associates were commissioned to design Islamic women’s wudu amenities.
Gardner Wetherill and Associates were commissioned by UNSW to transform the dark corridors of Level 13 of the the Matthews building into an uplifting and contemporary environment for the School of Psychology.
UNSW commissioned Gardner Wetherill and Associates to design an uplifting and contemporary environment for the Post Graduates on Level 14 of the Matthews building at their Kensington Campus.
Fabrication Workshop/UTS
Faculty of Design,
Architecture + Building
The pragmatic and inspirational design for the Faculty of Design, Architecture and Building provides a showcase for the Fabrication Workshop Department which was developed together with the Photographic Department . The “slick industrial” aesthetic was used as the vehicle to design educational facilities as a series of shop fronts.
Haymarket Block D – UTS Faculty of Business
An existing labyrinth of dark deep floor suite of acedemic offices was transformed into light, clear working environments for two school within the one faculty. Each school had its own entries and meeting facilities that though colour and careful selection of material, provide a unique identity for each but at the same time maintain design consistency and are faithful to the UTS brand.
School of Business 645 Harris Street, UTS
We worked with the existing structure to lead the users through the space creating texture, warmth, colour and a human scale. The design included sustainable materials selections and the integration of energy efficient building systems.
UTS has had a high quality outcome on a moderate budget which enables their Business Groups to present themselves in a very positive light.
UNSW – Confucius Institute
GWA were awarded the contract to provide architectural services to UNSW for the concept design of their Confucius Institute promoting educational, artistic and business links with China.
Whilst a small scale project, this is a high end interior fitout with a high profile. We have succeeded in delivering the project from concept to tender over a four week period.

Kambala School, Bain Independant Learning Centre
This design increased the floor area of the existing library by extending the existing envelope to the south and by adding additional internal reading balconies to the mezzanine level. There is a new common room to the south of the existing with an associated terrace. The space has been planned to capture the amazing Harbour views.
