Gardner Wetherill & Associates were commissioned to develop and implement a master plan for Macquarie Park Cemetery entry precinct to better utilise the lands potential as well as put in place carefully considered zoning and strengthen the relationship to the National Park context. The plan includes a function centre, a small chapel, an open pavilion, the adaptive re-use of the tired existing Function and Administration Building (as an expanded Administration Centre) as well as landscape, sculpture and memorial gardens.
These gathering spaces have been designed to serve the community in the journey of remembrance in all its forms of celebration: shelters of quiet reflection and solace integrated into both the parkland and bushland surrounds. With access to fresh air, dappled light, the familiar sound of moving water, the scent of landscape, the binding concept was to create shelters with carefully considered sensory connectivity to their surrounds.
