As part of the UTS Master Plan, all of the university’s administrative units are in the process of being relocated to Building 1 (Tower).  GWA were engaged to relocate UTS International & Advancement, CRC & CLG and shared staff meeting spaces to Levels 20 and 21.

Constructed in the early 70’s, Building 1 is a significant work of mid-century modernism, where structural expressionism along with robust and natural finishes are central to the architecture.

The refurbishment strategy for the workplace fit out was to gather rooms around the central core; create open plan to the perimeter, and re‑expose the building structure.

The design is flexible and adaptable to accommodate future changes; providing opportunities for expansion and contraction of staff numbers in line with changing demand.

The workspace is bright, open, transparent and dynamic, with vistas to the north and south. Through careful selection of natural materials each floor has its own expression; more refined natural timbers on Level 20 and rustic and copper tones on Level 21. The new materials complement the original exposed concrete and make reference to the building’s brutalist aesthetic.
